and its been taken over by a very nice lady but she will be making it more of a quilting store...so won't have that much cross stitch stuff...managed to get a few threads but nothing much else....Hate that when your stitchy store disappears...I used to spend ages in it
that's a shame, I have a good stitchy shop here, great for a browse, though I don't tend to buy, ( bet they hate me going in) as it's soooooo expensive, can get everything a fraction of the price on ebay. I tend to just look in the window now, when I pass, as I'm sure they are thinking, oh there she is again, she never spends anything though lol.
i have one near me and again it is really expensive but i tend to spend in there. I get all my knitting things in there as well. As i know everyone there they normally do me a deal on things when i spend a lot. Although it stills doesn't work out cheeper than the net.
I think the net is taking over from the stores.
WIP - 1) Lanarte Floral Blush (frontal view) 2) The Green Dragonling- for my sis 3) Happily ever after dimensions kit. = Await thread from company. 4)Angelina Sampler= Just back stitch to complete.
That's a shame Jeanette maybe you could start a petition to keep it corss stitchy stuff LOL. I do buy online but do still like to buy at a shop, love being able to actually look at stuff and take home straight away.
ive never really had a stitchy shop, in a way Im glad as it would have cost me a fortune, but at the same time Id like to see what I was buying before getting it, as sometimes when I buy online you are never sure what it will be like until it arrives, especially with fabric quality
My local stitching shop closed down at the end off last month. They sold DMC threads which is what I like to use so was handy if I just need a few threads but now there is no where else in my local town that sell DMC threads.
It is a shame when any shop close. But than more people buy from the internet which if its cheaper on the internet your going to go where its cheaper.
We only have a hobbycraft, I would love to have a little stitching shop that I could lose myself in for a few hours. It's very rare that I buy anything from Hobbycraft as I always buy from SewandSo or Superstitcher. I only buy from Hobbycraft if i need any thread in an emergency.
My local shop is about 15 minute drive, which is okay except there is no parking which is a bit of a problem when you have driven
However, I buy off ebay, and am paying 1/4 of the shop price and getting a HUGE variety of stuff.
I wanted some framecraft porcelain trinket boxes and went in and they are so expensive. I came home, looked on framecraft website, did a currency conversion from pounds to AUS $ and the shop is making a huge profit...over 50%. I was not impressed. I ended up finding a UK website that ships to Australia and it's about 40% cheaper than in my local shop including postage. I haven't ordered yet though, I have just bought a heap of doilys, kitchen and bath towels, pillowcases off ebay. I am merrily stitching away and when I have done them, I have my christmas decorations to make and then I am going to consider ordering a few framecraft items, I drool over that website.
Although I do some pictures, I prefer to cross stitch items that can be used.
i went into a craft shop over the weekend in a neighbouring town and the kits were on average £5 more expensive than online (unless if i get a bargain from any of you here!) and i caught myself thinking i can buy this online... but hey if we all buy online all the time these shops will go out of business and where would be browse? i am going back a saturday and i will buy a kit then
It is a shame when craft shops close, but they just can't compete with the internet. Obviously they can't afford to charge less as their overheads and bills will be more expensive than someone who has an on-line shop run from their own home.
I also buy all my stash on the internet but if it is an emergency I am stuck. The nearest Craft shop to me who I know has all the DMC thread in stock is 40 minute drive away. Got 2 shops nearer but they only have a small selection of cross stitch items.
hi jeanette that is the shop that i always went to up till last week as i think she is very expensive for her threads so i now try and get oh to take me to hobby craft.
Begin every day with a hug

There is one DMC shop near my company ,but I seldom buy the products from it as very expensive .So I often buy cross stitching kits from internet as they are cheap and good quality .
We used to have a Black Sheep store in Wigan, but they packed up and moved to southport.
Now the nearest places to go are Hobbycraft - either in Bolton or Warrington - neither which are any good to me as i cant drive!! have to rely on dh to take me (which he hates becuase i spend too much time in there lol)

Awwwh what a shame I use sewandso quite regularly and a few of the little stores in town. I haven't browsed them recently but looked round a stitchy shop near to where my bf works in Stoke on Trent and was quite impressed - so when I move, I shall be using that frequenty I think as well as sewandso
Even in London, which everyone thinks is stuffed with shops, good stitching stuff can be hard to find. Liberty and John Lewis used to have great stitch departments. but they both had major revamps in the past few years to appeal to the fashion trade, and guess what? Stitch departments have shrunk and they only stock Anchor stranded threads. Liberty used to do a great range of specialty threads but that's all gone.
The only place I can find anywhere near the centre of London that does DMC and special threads is Delicate Stitches opposite Kentish Town Tube. They are more expensive, but then it costs a lot more to run a physical shop than an Internet one. I don't mind buying online if it's a brand I've used before but you really can't judge the quality unless you see it. And if you run out of something just at the end of a project with a deadline, the Internet can be slow to deliver...
Wish I lived near one of those huge craft supermarkets like they have in the States!
