Does anyone do this? I am going to try it soon. I remember doing an embroidery years ago of a black cat on a blue checked tablecloth, I wish i still had the chart
Do you have to use the proper threads, or will cross-stitch DMC still work?
Welcome to the world of crewel embroidery, Jessica -Rose.
The threads you use for cross stitch (DMC 6-stranded floss) are the same threads you can use for crewel embroidery.
The beauty of freestyle embroidery techniques (of which crewel is one) is that you can use a number of different threads to achieve different effects for the same design.
Stranded floss is great to use as a general thread, as you can use different amounts of strands to achieve different textures - just like you do with cross stitch.
I think that you will enjoy doing crewel, as it will introduce you to a lot more stitches and build your skill and enjoyment of embroidery.

Hi! I've done a couple of things with crewel embroidery. I can recommend Dimensions kits. They have some small 5x7 sizes that can be done in a weekend or so and they have some that are very easy when learning. Unfortunately, the ones I got I picked up while in the States so don't really know who would carry them in the UK and Europe but I'd bet if you checked the Dimensions website they'd have some ideas!
Good luck and have fun!
