If I have a chart from either a kit or a mag, should I not copy it to my computer for other people to use? Thanks for any help in advance!
It is illegal due to copyright to sell copies for personal gain and i think its also illegal to send out copies too for nothing but many people do it.If there was a proper admin on here it would be regulated and any posts refering to copies would be taken off.
Copyright prohibits the use of copy any material in connection with profitable gain.
If you have a chart and photocopy that chart, use the photocopy one to mark as you go etc then you are not commiting any offense and you have already purchased the proper chart and are just preserving it.
The only way copyright would really get involved is if you are photocopying the same item many times with intent to forward to others.
The same goes for email. you can scan and keep on computer for emergencies. i.e. in case original gets damaged but you must keep original and not pass on;
I learnt this while working at a pub. we copies all cds and used the copies on karaoke. We were told we werent doing anything inllegal as we still had all the originals.
I cannot stand ignorant people so most of the time just ignore newbies asking for a chart, why should we give out charts etc away to people we don't no who cant even be bothered to say hi or thanks?
I think it would be a great idea to have 'who we are' page. I've been a member for a while now and at first I was quite shy so I did not post huge amounts but I did join in with some discussions. I joined some exchanges - asked a lot of stitchy questions etc.
however, i do not remember if I ever did a proper in depth thiis is who I am kind of post.
would be a great idea to have them to refer back too.
If a newbie contributes and is still here after a few weeks I would have no problem sharing as they will probably be addicted to this site by then anyway LOL
i saw some newbies on there the other day. but yes i can see what you mean now. well obviously they're not going to get more of a chance of finding them charts if they're not going to be polite.

Well, I am a newbie here and I have every intention of being polite and nice. Just my way in real life too, so I guess it gets carried over.
It might be happening because perhaps there are people who aren't aware that there is a certain protocol for new members to discussion boards. I am a moderator at another forum based here in the US. There are several different boards on it. One area is called Beginner's Block. It contains a board strictly for introductions. This gives the new member a chance to start a new topic, introducing themselves properly as well as allowing other members the chance to welcome them. Just something to think about.

I just love coming on here for the fellowship with other cross stitchy people and I love popping in for a chat but it's never occured to me to ask for free charts from anyone and I would probably be too embarressed to ask anyway! Whatever I do though I hope I'd remember my manners. There seems to be some very thoughtless and ungrateful people out there!!!
I agree with Piper. If a newbie joins and sticks around for a few weeks and gets involved with posts, I'd have no problem helping them out if I could.
The issue here is that a lot of people are joining just to ask for stuff and often with no manners and no intention of sticking around or replying to anyone's posts. Although it's not essential to post your profile, I do think it helps if you've posted a few times and you are polite and people know your username, then if you needed help you'd probably get it.
Hope that makes sense, to Lindsay and Spiral and anyone else in doubt.

I always offer the original chart to one of the many friends I have made on here as there is no way Im doing them again, I love to see things being put to good use after they are finished with, whats the sense of them just rotting away in a drawer, I never swap or sell and hope that perhaps when Im looking for something someone will help me out.
Also the amount of charts people have been asking for make me wonder whether the charts are for their use or whether they are going to sell and swap to other people.
I never thought of that Steph but yes and some of those requests are for the expensive stuff too like the gold collection.
I dont get much chance to come on here very often these days, so it's not something i've noticed to be honest. But really there's no need to not say please or thank you. I agree with a comment somebody else has made, that maybe they're selling them on? You do often find charts on ebay.

I agree that it would be nice to see some 'please and thank yous' but sometimes that just doesn't happen. You can ignore those posts easily.
But in my opinion just because someone doesn't join in discussions or go into depth about themselves and is using the site for looking for things related to cross stitch, they shouldn't be banned or suspended. It is a cross stitch forum and there is a charts section. however, we can chose not to respond.
There are a huge amount of regulars and posts that if you are new, you can feel like an outsider and it can be intiminating as the posts can seem (even though unintentional) just between 'us' and a newbie may not feel right jumping in...

As a "newbie" (been registered a while but didn't post til last week) I hope I have been well behaved It is sometimes daunting when so many people already know each other so well - like the new kid in the playground! But the only way to make friends and become included is to join in the posts etc Chart sharing can be a sensitive issue, I have had requests for large charts of projects I have done on FB by people I don't know - without so much as a please or thankyou or a friend request - you want my chart but not my friendship? No chance lol! However, with the right approach......I'm a very generous person I am enjoying dipping my toes into the forum very much and appreciate the lovely comments on my work that I have posted.
